Since her first film back in 1966, Rangula Ratnam, Rekha has grown to become one of India's biggest female stars. Over the past 50 years, the actor has given her fans some unforgettable roles, and off-screen, has always been a topic of interest for her mysterious, yet magnetic personality. Born on October 10, 1954, Bhanurekha Ganesan falls under the sign of Libra, along with Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini and Parineeti Chopra. Represented by a pair of scales, Librans are 'balancers', who prize fairness in day-to-day dealings and smooth-sailing relationships. If you, like her, belong to the same zodiac sign, you may have more in common with this icon than you may know. Scroll to discover five traits that make Rekha a typical Libran.
Librans are one of the zodiac's hardest workers
Having quit school at just thirteen years old, Rekha's rise to the top has been a tumultuous one. But despite all the hurdles ("I was completely lost," the actor revealed to Simi Garewal in a special interview. "I was away from my home, didn't know the language, didn't know a single soul, and my mom wasn't with me as she was critically ill. I was hating every moment of it."), the teen took things in her stride and eventually grew to become a superstar in Bollywood.
Despite their occasional indecisiveness, Librans can truly commit to a goal, and it's rare to see them slack off in their professional environments. Case in point: at IIFA 2018, Rekha returned to the stage at sixty three years old to present one of the most impressive performances of her career, proving that hard work will always be one of her strongest traits.
The mujra-style dance received a standing ovation, which also became the highlight of the evening. "I have just watched the best performance of my life and possibly the best one I will ever see," actor Shraddha Kapoor said post the show. "When a shooting star decides to come down to earth and the entire audience is awestruck by her performance.
Rekha ji, there are no words to describe how lucky we all are that we got to experience your magic right before our eyes. You all are in for the treat of a lifetime."
People under the sun sign Libra are conoisseurs of all things beautiful
Ruled by Venus, Libra individuals are naturally drawn to things of great beauty, be it art, music, theatre or fine food. "I'm not impressed with the ordinary," Rekha once confessed. "Mediocracy bores me." Like most Librans, Rekha has learned the trick to making beauty a part of her daily life: "I am a very observant person. And anything that fascinates me, anything that impresses me, I just lap it all up. I lap it up for life.
And I allow it to seep in and become a part of me." In the star's case, this rings true not just in her elegant mannerisms, but also extends to her wardrobe and beauty looks. The actor, who loves dramatic makeup looks that she often does herself, was the first Bollywood actor to use oil-based makeup in films instead of more cakey, talc-based products, setting a trend in the industry.
She is also known for her exceptional collection of saris, and recently even gifted one of her treasured drapes to actor Deepika Padukone.
This zodiac sign craves fulfilling relationships, and often makes a great friend
Though Librans put a lot of importance on enjoying everything in moderation, it's often true that they are sensitive beings, who love making deep connections. People who fall under this sign dream of having the ideal family, and can be surprisingly romantic in relationships. "My fantasy is to have lots of children," Rekha said in a Filmfare interview years ago.
"I enjoy the privacy of my home. But I want the emptiness of my houses to be filled with children." When asked about the life path she would have chosen for herself as a child, the actor responded saying, "At that point, all I wanted was to be married, and loved and to spend the rest of my life with somebody who truly, truly, truly, truly cared for me, and have children. Lots and lots and lots of children. I wonder why I felt like that then. But that's what she [Bhanurekha Ganesan] wanted. That was her dream."
Libra individuals are very independent beings too
Because of their ability to perfectly balance all aspects of their lives, Librans, quite like Geminis, can have dual personalities, opinions and tastes. Though this Air sign loves the security of family, it also enjoys its space.
"I do not know any person who is as privileged and lucky as I am... to have the independence of being able to make my own choices, to be able to get up and go and do exactly what I want, to decide who I want to meet, where I want to go, which party I go to, which party I don't go to, who I invite over... everything is in my hands. And it's become a way of life,"
Rekha told Garewal. Though the star has confessed that she adores babies, she also once said, "Children may tie me down to domesticated life, and I have other dreams too."
Despite their sensitive nature, Librans are known for their stoic silence
"I don't think people change, I don't think natures change. At least I haven't," Rekha once said while looking at a picture of herself as a child. "Whatever she [Bhanurekha Ganesan] innately was a human being, she is still very much there. Very shy... I know it's hard to believe but it's true. Very loving... a loner, which I very much am even now."
As the peace makers of the zodiac, Libra individuals often take on the responsibility of bringing harmony to situations, and as a result, tend to keep their own emotions to themselves to avoid conflicts. "I was never the kind of person who voiced my impressions or my feelings.
I never told anybody what I feel. I still don't," the star said. But one place where she has always let her emotions run wild has been in her movies. From 1981's Umrao Jaan to 1988's Khoon Bhari Maang, Rekha has transformed herself again and again for her fans, and continues to inspire movie lovers all over the globe.
In Sanjay Leela Bhanali's words, "Rekha is a question mark, an exclamation mark, a comma, never a full stop. To know her is to be seduced by life."
